I just finished watching Fridays episode (yes, I do know that it originally aired back in Dec) where they talked about Halt the Salt...it was extremely eye opening! Basically it was a warning that Americans are consuming WAY too much salt (it's recommended we consume 1500mg a day on average most Americans are eating upwards of 3400mg a day!!). Sodium increases blood pressure which is a MAJOR cause of death in the US!
So far today I had eaten my healthy breakfast and Lunch and I estimated that I had already consumed 1355mg!!! Almost all of my daily recommended intake!
Anyway EXTREMELY interesting! I recommend watching this episode and then joining the Halt the Salt Movement. They also provided this Quick Reference Label Guide for shopping!

I agree that it's definitely an eye opening thing to monitor salt intake! There are way too many processed foods out there that look & claim to be healthy at first glance & then are full of sodium. I struggle with trying not to eat too much sodium myself, & appreciate this post, Suzi!
ReplyDeleteI've noticed that salt comes from places that aren't necessary... take for example, a can of green beans. When you buy them at the store, they actually add salt. They do sell "no salt added" versions that taste just great! Why do we need someone else to add salt to things? I've been surprised by other things, too... sauces, canned soups, salsas are some of the worst! I totally appreciate this post, SueAnn - you're awesome!
